Empowering Futures: Federal Way Public Schools Scholars Thrive in the 11th Annual Hour of Code

Federal Way Public Schools (FWPS) participated in the 11^th annual Hour of Code as part of Computer Science Education Week, December 4 – 8. In just an hour of coding, this exciting event demonstrates that computer science is accessible to everyone. Scholars seized the opportunity to delve into programing and advance their understanding of software development.

This year, an impressive 13,392 FWPS scholars K-12 of all skill levels, learned coding through fun and engaging activities. No matter their future aspirations – be it in medicine, business, politics, or the arts – acquiring the skills to build or program technology will support students in realizing their dreams.

Aligned with the district's strategic plan Goal 5, focused on guiding students through successful transitions to high school graduation, the event showcased varied STEM pathways. Students encountered a spectrum of experiences, starting from grasping computer basics to mastering logic, commands, and control statements. From aiding a beaver to construct its dam in the "Beaver Achiever" Hour of Code game to advanced robotics programming for high school competitions, the activities catered to diverse interests and skill levels.

Dominic, a third-grade scholar, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "Coding is really fun. I wish I could code all the time because I like it. I think it's going to help me when I grow up because I want to be a coder when I grow up. I want to code robots for my job." Meanwhile, students also had the option to run Minecraft Education Edition: Aquatic Voyage to facilitate learning through digital puzzles while applying coding skills.

The event not only provided exposure but also opened doors to potential careers in software development and programming, sectors known for high demand and lucrative opportunities. The Hour of Code served as an engaging STEM platform, accommodating scholars at various computer literacy levels, fostering new skills and achievements through interactive projects. Third-grade scholar, Aunders, shared, “I love coding. There are so many fun apps and activities. […] Since I know how to code, I can design my own games and do that when I grow up.”

Superintendent Dr. Dani Pfeiffer shared, "By embracing the Hour of Code, we're not just teaching coding; we're nurturing a mindset of innovation and problem-solving in every scholar, preparing them for a future where technology is at the heart of progress."
